Man held young child during standoff with police, GPD says

Police say the man threatened to kill officers and have police shoot him while he was holding a young child.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A mother and her two young children are safe Wednesday morning after a standoff situation at a home last night. Police said an officer shot the man accused of holding his family hostage.

Police said they were called to a domestic issue at a home on Kersey Street around 11 p.m. Tuesday. Investigators were at the scene until 6 p.m. Wednesday night.

Officers were told a man was armed with a gun and threatened to kill the woman who called 911. Police said the suspect started making threats to kill police and to have them shoot him while he was holding a young child in his arms.

GPD said the man refused to come outside and fired a gun toward officers from the second floor of the house. Negotiations continued for a while, but the man still did not come outside.

Police said officers then saw the man pull out a gun, and that's when a Special Response Team officer shot his rifle, striking the man. The suspect continued to barricade himself inside the home.

Around 5:30 a.m., police took the suspect into custody.

Sometime during the barricade situation, neighbors said police knocked on their doors asking them to evacuate.

Those who didn't speak with police during the night heard about the chaos from neighbors the next morning.

"It's scary in our neighborhood to know that you are living in a quiet neighborhood and then something like this happens. Then you have children and older people, most older people stay in this area too and you want it safe for them too," explained longtime resident, Paula Bradshaw.

Due to the barricade situation, another neighbor was taking measures to protect his family.

"I'm putting cameras on the back of the house now, since all of this is going on and putting some more lighting back there because of that little incident," Darryl Simpson continued," You've got to be careful of what's going on in the neighborhood."

Thankfully police say the woman and two young children in the home were not hurt. No officers were hurt either.

The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and charges are pending.

Since an officer shot the suspect, the police department says they're conducting an internal investigation.

According to the department, the officer has been placed on administrative leave which is standard protocol in situations like these.
