Greensboro police officer involved in a shooting after car chase

During a chase, the suspect's vehicle ran off the road. While approaching the vehicle, the car sped up toward the officer and the officer fired his weapon.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Greensboro Police Department said there was an officer-involved shooting late Saturday night around 10 p.m.

During a traffic stop on Lees Chapel Road near Southern Webbing Mill Road, the suspect drove off, sparking a police chase. The suspect's vehicle ran off the road during the chase, according to police. 

The officer then got out of his vehicle and gave commands for the suspect to get out of the vehicle, police said. When the officer approached the suspect’s vehicle, they sped up toward the officer, police said. Then the officer fired their weapon, according to police. 

There were no visible injuries and no one was struck by the discharged weapon. The suspect was taken into custody. At the request of the driver and passenger, they were taken to the hospital.

The identity of the individuals involved and criminal charges will be revealed in the coming weeks.

The Greensboro Police Department’s Professional Standards Division will conduct an internal investigation to determine whether Greensboro Police Department policies were followed.

Police said the officer who fired their weapon will be placed on administrative duty per departmental policy.
