Greensboro 18-year-old injured in hit-and-run two days before Christmas

The 18-year-old was hit while walking home from getting a hair cut two days before Christmas.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The search continues for who hit a Greensboro police lieutenant's son.

Police said the driver fled after hitting the 18-year-old Saturday.

Jayden Diaz is spending his Christmas break wearing a sling trying to process the trauma he experienced over the weekend.

"I was surprised I was alive because of the way the truck hit me. It's not anything I can explain," Jayden said. "I'll never forget it. I've been having recurring dreams about it. Every time I go to sleep I feel the impact like I'm repeating it in my head. It's something that's going to take time for me to get over."

Two days before Christmas, Jayden said he was hit by a pick-up truck as he was walking home from getting a haircut.

"The last thing I remember is me screaming and the car hitting me," Jayden said. "Then I woke up and I was looking at the sky."

Jayden said he landed in a ditch off North Church Street and Old Lake Jenette Road in Greensboro near where he was walking.

Luckily his phone landed near him and he was able to call his mother.

A nurse who witnessed the hit and run and residents nearby jumped in to help until his mom arrived.

"Some people from the houses that heard me get hit walked out as well. They all called 911 to make sure I was okay," Jayden said.

"He did not look good. The left side of his body didn't look like it was attached to his body," said Jayden's mom, Teresse Diaz. "He didn't want to move it. It was shocking to see him like that."

A surreal moment that his mom said first responders handled extremely well.

"This was a miracle," Teresse said. "He is a walking miracle."

Jayden has a broken elbow and soreness on his left side.

"It made me more grateful for the things around me," Jayden said. "I'm here for a reason."

Although he is grateful to be alive, the family wants justice.

"To that person, I would say it's never too late to do the right thing," Teresse said. "Sometimes we think our mistakes are unforgivable. Anyone can be forgiven."

The report from Greensboro police shows that a white pickup truck hit Jayden.

The family said there was damage to the side mirror and the right side of the truck.
