GREENSBORO, N.C. — People in this Greensboro neighborhood on Bayberry Lane woke up beside a crime scene.
"When I left for work in the morning, they had the area cornered off police officers and I saw the investigator unit there, so I figured something was going on," said Clark Ervin.
Ervin and others would soon find out their neighbor, Douglas Gillie Jr. was shot and killed. The suspect is his son.
"It's a tragedy not only for the people that's done gone but that's a 22-year-old that's a kid his life is over. I mean it's over," said Cora Bolden.
Bolden and her sister, Burta Harmon weren't sure if the father and son, Thomas Gillie lived together, but they remember seeing them around.
"We were having that yard sale and they were having a yard sale and they walked over and talk to us and like I said just those few but there's never been any signs of problems no fighting," Bolden and Harmon explained.
After the Greensboro shooting, police say Gillie headed to a Kernersville apartment complex.
There, three people were shot, two of them died.
"It's a total shock, it's got to be there's just no explanation for the tragedy and it's a tragedy. That's the only way to look at it," said Bolden.
Kernersville police say the shootout happened between Gillie and officers. Gillie surrendered shortly after.
Hawthorne at the Meadows Apartments released a statement saying in part, "Officials believe this was a family-driven, isolated attack, and there is no imminent danger to Meadows residents. We are deeply saddened by this incident."
Gillie faces two counts of general murder and two counts of attempted murder.
He is at the Forsyth County detention center and is being held without bond.
