ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. — A suspect is being charged Monday with concealing a body in Orange County last week, according to deputies.
Just before 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15, deputies said a man walking his dog off Heron Pond Drive found the body of 35-year-old Susan Margaret Horkay also known as Skylar Brooks of Greensboro. Investigators said it appeared that someone dragged Brooks' body into the woods.
Orange County Sheriff’s Office said 46-year-old Randel L. Riggsbee is facing a felony for concealing Brooks' death.
Investigators said Brooks and Riggsbee knew each other and spent some time at his home that morning on Saturday, Oct. 14, and later that afternoon. Deputies said Riggsbee has ties to Orange County and is familiar with the Heron Pond Drive area.
Deputies said the medical examiner used a rapid toxicology screening tool where they found fentanyl and cocaine in Brooks’ blood. These results are only preliminary; the results of additional toxicology tests will not be available for several months.
Deputies said more charges may be forthcoming.
Sheriff Blackwood said, “In the drug world, fentanyl is everywhere. It is critically dangerous, leading to increasing numbers of overdoses and deaths. However, those who use it to lace the substances they sell do so to boost profit. My office is committed to doing whatever we can to prevent the proliferation of this drug and the deaths it causes.”
After his arrest, Riggsbee appeared before the magistrate in Orange County who placed him under a $75,000.00 secure bond and scheduled his first court appearance for Oct. 24 at 2 p.m.
