Forsyth Co. deputy hit by suspect car during overnight pursuit in Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem police will not release the name of the deputy that was injured at this time.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem police said they heard multiple gunshots near South Martin Luther King Jr. Drive around 2:15 a.m. Monday.

Officers immediately began driving toward the area where they found a red car leaving the area. Officers tried to stop the car near Tower Street due to its proximity to the gunfire.

The suspect saw officers and fled the scene, starting a pursuit.

During the pursuit, a Forsyth County deputy was working an off-duty highway construction detail. Officers said the deputy was providing visibility and protection for a road construction crew. The deputy had left their car, to warn the crew of the approaching pursuit so that they could get to safety before the suspect tried to enter the work area.

The deputy was hit by the suspect car while trying to get out of the way.

The pursuit ended shortly after the car hit the deputy and all four of the passengers were taken into custody without incident.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect vehicle had discharged a gun into a home on Timlic Avenue before leaving the area. The home was occupied by seven people including six children. No one was injured, according to police.

A gun and multiple shell casings were recovered following the pursuit.

As a result of the investigation, officers arrested and charged four people including:

The driver, who is considered a juvenile, faces multiple charges including felony assault with a deadly weapon on a government enforcement official.

Eddie Winslow Oakes, Jr., 18, was charged with 11 counts of felony discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling and felony discharging a firearm from within an enclosure.

Nathaniel Isiah Wolford, 19, and Christopher Anthony Allen, 19, were charged with 11 counts of felony discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.

The deputy was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The identity of the deputy will not be released at this time.
