Man arrested after driving on golf course during chase with officers, police say

Police said the man went off-road onto the golf course at Forsyth Country Club.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem police said a man drove through a golf course during a chase with officers on Saturday. 

It started around 4:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Village Tavern on Griffith Road. According to a release, Gang Unit Officers tried to pull over Cortney Phifer, who then rammed into a patrol car and left the scene. 

Officers chased Phifer from Stratford Road to Country Club Road, where they said he went onto the property of Forsyth Country Club and drove off-road on the golf course. 

Police said they halted the chase for safety reasons, but once Phifer got back on Country Club Road, they pursued him again. 

The chase ended when Phifer's car and a patrol car crashed. He was taken into custody. 

No one was hurt during the chase or crash. 

Phifer faces the following charges: 

  • Felony Assault on a Government Official
  • Felony Flee to Elude
  • Felony Possession w/ Intent to Sell/Deliver Marijuana
  • Felony Possession of Marijuana
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Hit & Run (3 Counts)
  • Injury to Real Property
  • Reckless Driving
  • Driving w/ a Revoked License
