GREENSBORO, N.C. — Early Sunday afternoon, the Secret Service reported that a second gunman attempted to take the life of former President Donald Trump. This time, it wasn't at a rally. Instead, the incident occurred while Trump was golfing.
"Somebody needs to sit down with him and have a discussion about realistic things he should and should not be doing,” former FBI agent Kyle Loven said.
That's the advice from Loven, who says Trump now has a target on his back. Sunday marked the second apparent assassination attempt on the former president.
At Trump’s golf club in Florida, the FBI says Secret Service agents opened fire on a gunman near the property line and rushed Trump to safety. According to the Secret Service, Ryan Routh, who is now in custody, stuck a rifle through a chain-link fence and aimed at Trump’s golf course.
“Given the fact that there had been one attempt, that would have really sounded the alarm bells for me,” Loven said. “If I had been in charge of the presidential detail, I would have been very adamant about additional resources. One assassination attempt on a former president is one too many. There needs to be adequate and overdue security.”
Loven expressed concerns that this second attempt is even more troubling than the first, which occurred just two months ago. He pointed out that golf courses are much more spread out, making it easier for someone to hide from security and plan an attack.
“My understanding is the course runs parallel with a very well-traveled road, which makes it even more difficult to restrict traffic, both vehicle and foot traffic. That creates a security nightmare,” Loven added.
Regardless of the challenges, Loven emphasized that Trump must change his habits moving forward, including altering everyday routines. He stressed that these types of changes could be the difference between life and death.
“Now we must re-examine everything. We must re-examine his routines, where he goes, how he goes about certain things, and I think the Secret Service needs to be very frank and very adamant with him,” Loven said.
