GREENSBORO, N.C. — Most interactions at Firehouse Grocery in Greensboro are friendly For Jay Eisenberg.
He's managed the corner store for 8 years.
But lately, they've had some bad apples. Surveillance video from Sunday appears to show a man stealing a bag of chips and a drink.
Later that same night another man tries to steal a beer, and a different employee tries to stop him.
"He started shouting saying do something in a fighting stance," said Jerry Gonzolas a regular at the store.
In the video, the man punches the employee in the face several times.
Then Jerry Gonzalez goes outside with the thief.
"When we went out we fell and he went for my leg and then I pinned him waiting for the cops to come," Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said to stop the man from hurting the employee any further he stepped in until police arrived, but hurt himself in the process.
He spoke to me on a crutch but says he'll be fine.
"I guess I'm glad I was here," Gonzalez said. "I'm not worried about safety I think it was just random."
Eisenberg on the other hand is very concerned about his business.
"My employee is taking some time off and doesn't want to come to work. It affects us not just financially from the loss of products but also from employees. It affects everything," Eisenberg said. "There were customers in the store when this happened. How many of them will return I don't know."
He said the duo had been stealing things for about a week.
"There's nothing we can do if you confront them you get assaulted they have made me concerned that they may come on with ill intent," Eisenberg said. "Police need to patrol more around this area."
Eisenberg is happy Gonzalez was there to keep everyone safe.
"It makes me feel good like people care," Eisenberg said.
Police arrested the man who assaulted the employee.
As for Gonzalez, he'll get to stop in the store and get some items for free for his heroism.
