GREENSBORO, N.C. — Both violent and property crimes are on the decline in North Carolina, according to recently released data by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The FBI defines "violent crimes" as murder, rape, robbery or aggravated assault. Property crimes, on the other hand, consist of arson, burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft.

According to the data, there were 302,418 combined violent and property crimes reported in the state in 2014. That number dropped to 255,405 in 2023, a decrease of 15.5%.

The amount of property crime has dropped off dramatically since 272,619 reported cases in 2014. While there was an uptick of reported cases during the COVID-19 pandemic, the number sat at 213,731 in 2023, a decrease of 21.6%.

Violent crime followed a different trajectory, rising steadily from 29,799 reported cases in 2014 to a high of 46,144 in 2020. From 2020 to 2023, the state saw a 9.7% decrease in violent crime, with 41,674 cases reported in 2023.

Looking at things through a more local lens, here's a look at data reported by the Greensboro Police Department:

  • 2014 Total violent/property crimes: 11,597
  • 2023 Total violent/property crimes: 13,910 (19.9% increase)
  • 2014 violent crimes: 1,323
