BURLINGTON, N.C. — A Burlington school administrator is accused of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old in a bathroom on school property, according to police.
Police said after they received a tip that 43-year-old Daniel McInnis was allegedly involved in misconduct with a student, they opened an investigation on Dec. 8., 2023.
In a statement, the Alamance-Burlington School System said they have a zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate behavior towards children:
We are shocked and saddened by the allegations presented today in court regarding Mr. McInnis. We hold our staff to the highest standards and trust that they use best practices when interacting with students at all times. We have zero tolerance for any inappropriate behavior towards children. While we cannot comment on ongoing legal matters, we want to assure all families that we are taking this situation very seriously. Any misconduct with minors, in any form, is unacceptable. Our commitment is to the alleged victim first and foremost. We encourage any student or family who ever feels unsafe or uncomfortable to immediately report it so we can take swift action.
ABSS said McInnis served as principal of Eastlawn Elementary since being promoted in 2012. He was previously hired as assistant principal at Eastlawn Elementary in 2011.
The district said he is on paid administrative leave. ABSS school board members plan to meet in a closed session Jan. 9 to discuss the next steps for McInnis's employment.
"Mr. McIinnis has been employed with the district for 11 years. Most of that time has been at Eastlawn Elementary. These families know him, these students have grown to know him. We want to make sure we have support in place for them, especially those who are impacted by this news," ABSS spokesperson Les Atkins said.
He said the district has mental health resources available on Eastlawn Elementary's campus for students and staff.
Burlington police originally said McInnis was given a $500,000 bond. North Carolina Court records show he was given a $250,000.00 bond, and his wife bailed him out.
Court documents state that McInnis "poses a danger to the public."
