GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Dudley High community is mourning the loss of one of their own.
Greensboro Police said James David Currie, 17, was shot to death Sunday night around 10:40 p.m. on Montcastle Drive.
WFMY News 2 sat down with James' uncle Samuel Currie, who says his family is now planning for a funeral rather than his graduation.
"Overall with the accomplishment of school he was able to find a good place within himself or life to go ahead and say 'let me graduate, let me make this step in life to move on forward,'" Samuel said. "And for this to happen less than three months away, it's senseless and it's a loss of life."
James was a twin to brother Jashawn Currie who also attends Dudley High. He had two sisters as well. Samuel says Jashawn isn't speaking right now because he doesn't know how to handle the loss.
"He’s not speaking right now, he’s kind of shut down a little bit and I think he’s still wrapping his head around it because he’s your brother you see him every day."
But perhaps James' mom is taking it the hardest.
"Not too good to be honest with you," Samuel said. "She broke down a lot and she broke down so much she made herself sick."
Overall, Samuel says this just doesn't make sense.
"He wouldn't go anywhere unless he was with his brother and sister, and just to hear this it's shocking, it doesn't make any sense to me, it probably won't make any sense to me," Samuel said. "I've cried but I also have anger because this is the loss of a young life."
Samuel described James as quiet, a kid who kept to himself, and loved his family.
"He was a free spirited kid and he loved life, he loved his father," Samuel said. "Every time you saw one, you saw the other, so I think with the loss of his father {in 2015} that put a void in his life a little."
Greensboro Police are still investigating.
Samuel is pleading - if you know anything, say something.
"What I would say to the person that did this is at least come forward, because if you were with him, you put yourself in that same situation." Samuel said his family needs to know what happened for closure and relief.
Guilford County Schools said grief counselors were on hand Monday for students.
Earlier this month students at Page High mourned the loss of football player, Sincere Davis, who was shot earlier this month.
He later died at the hospital. Davis was shot on March 2 off of North Elm Street in Greensboro at the Pointe at Irving Park Apartment Homes.
