SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — The Surry County Sheriff's Office confirmed a deputy-involved shooting happened on West Imogene Church Road in Mount Airy on Tuesday.
Shortly before 1 p.m., deputies tried to serve a domestic violence restraining order at home on West Imogene Church Road in Mount Airy.
The suspect, Roger Dale Payne, 63, barricaded himself inside the house upon deputies' arrival.
After initial attempts to negotiate with Payne were unsuccessful, the situation escalated when Payne fired shots. In response, deputies deployed a combination of non-lethal and lethal force to ensure the safety of the community and law enforcement personnel on the scene.
Payne sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the incident and was immediately provided with medical assistance by deputies and EMS before being taken to the hospital for further treatment.
Payne was later released and is in custody at the Surry County Detention Center.
No deputies were injured during the shooting.
"We are committed to the safety of our community and our deputies," Sheriff Steve Hiatt said.
The NC SBI is investigating the incident.
Payne was charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill an emergency worker, one count of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, and resisting a public officer. Payne is currently being held under a $200,000 bond and is expected in court on August 21.
