Victim identified in Thomasville shooting

Police say a man was found dead on West Main Street late Monday night.

THOMASVILLE, N.C. — Police say a man was shot and killed in Thomasville late Monday night.

The shooting happened in the 300 block of West Main Street just shortly after 10 p.m., according to the Thomasville Police Department (TPD).

Officers found Johnny Marshall, 50, of Lexington dead at the scene. TPD have identified a person of interest, but haven't filed charges as of right now.

On Tuesday, WFMY spoke with several people in the area who were shaken up after hearing about the shooting.

JP Poindexter said he was born and raised in Thomasville and grew up going to Doak Park, nearby where the shooting happened. He said he was shocked to hear that someone was shot and killed in that area.

"I was there walking my dog around the park at Doak Park between eight and nine o'clock so I just missed it by an hour or so," Poindexter said. "To hear about a shooting that's so close, especially considering I was there a couple of hours before it happened. Yeah, it was kinda shocking no doubt."

Other neighbors in the area echoed his surprise. One business owner who has been on West Main Street for more than 17 years said she believes this is the first time she has heard of something like this happening in the area, ever.

Another family, who moved to Thomasville, a couple of years ago, stumbled upon the scene last night. They visit the park with their children, almost every day. However, seeing that area lit up with red and blue lights and roped off with crime scene tape shocked them to their core.

"I don't, I never expected something like that," James Smith said. "It's always been pretty good, since I've been here, we haven't had many incidents, especially of that nature so it was just kinda mind-blowing to know that could happen, especially in the vicinity that it happened in."

This investigation remains ongoing.
