WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — A 20-year-old North Wilkesboro man died after a crash on NC-16 in Wilkes County Thursday, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said around 1:30 p.m., they received a call about a deadly crash near Nichols Landing Lane. Investigators said a 2009 Toyota Venza was driving south on NC-16 behind a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado. The Silverado slowed down, preparing to make a left turn into a private driveway, and the Venza failed to slow down in time and swerved to the left, striking the Silverado. The Venza continued across the centerline and crashed head-on with a northbound 2008 Jeep Liberty.
The driver of the Venza, Shane Reese Cleary, died at the scene. Cleary was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle.
The Silverado driver, William Allen Binge, 81, of Millers Creek, was uninjured.
The driver of the Liberty, Nathan Shane Oxentine, 43, of Millers Creek, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The initial investigation does not show impairment to be a contributing factor. During the on-scene investigation, NC-16 was closed in the area for approximately three hours.
Troopers said no charges are expected to be filed in this case.
