EDEN, N.C. — Last week, a jury found Danville Ray Newman of Danville guilty of attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and first-degree burglary related to a 2021 incident in Eden, according to the Rockingham County District Attorney's office.

On Oct. 9, 2021, Newman broke into the Eden home of Angela Williams — his estranged wife — through a basement window. After finding Williams attempting to call for help, prosectors said Newman pointed a gun at her and ordered her to put the phone down. He then assaulted her by "punching her in the face repeatedly and telling her he was kill her."

According to the District Attorney's Office, Newman tried to bind Williams' hands with a zip tie, but he was unsuccessful. After asking Williams to tell him where her own gun was, Newman shot her in the chest once. Williams managed to retrieve her gun and shoot Newman, as well.

After the exchange of gunfire, Williams made it to a neighbor's home and Newman fled the scene in Williams' vehicle, leaving it a mile down the road. Newman was found after checking himself into a hospital in Virginia.

Senior Resident Superior Court Judge John Morris sentenced Newman to three consecutive terms or 180-228 months, 73-100 months and 83-112 months, meaning he will serve a minimum of 353 months (29.4 years).

“This was a true team effort," said Rockingham District Attorney Katy L. Gregg. "Mr. Newman attempted to kill his wife and get away with it. He underestimated her will to live and the work ethic of the Eden Police Department and the Rockingham County District Attorney’s Office. I am thankful for the outstanding job and hard work of everyone involved to make sure the Defendant will never be able to hurt anyone else in Rockingham County ever again.”
