WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A Carver High School student is facing charges after a gun and live ammunition was found on campus on Aug. 19, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.
The high school's School Resource Officer (SRO) received an anonymous tip about a student suspected of having a weapon on school grounds, deputies said.
The student was located and searched, where deputies said a firearm and live ammunition were found.
The firearm was never displayed and no one on campus was hurt or threatened, according to deputies.
"The time was yesterday for metal detectors to be in all of our schools. I understand the cost, however, I can’t help wondering what price we will pay for not having them. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office will continue to be vigilant while serving and protecting all of schools, teachers, students, and staff, at any cost,” said Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough, Jr.
Carver High School released the following statement to students:
“Hello Carver students, parents, and staff, this is Thyais Maxwell Carver High School Principal. I want to let you know early this afternoon we received an anonymous tip about a possible weapon on campus. The student in question was immediately located, an administrative search was initiated and during the search our SRO and school administrators located a handgun on the student. The weapon was never displayed, and no threats were ever made to any student or staff member. The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office will seek charges against the student for having a weapon on school property. The student will be disciplined according to the District’s Code of Character, Conduct, and Support.
In the coming days students will likely see extra officers around campus out of an abundance of caution. Please know we take these matters seriously and always appreciate students, parents, and staff letting us know about anything that concerns them. Safety is our number one priority. If you have any questions, please let me know.”
Forsyth County Board of Commissioners Chair Don Martin released the following statement:
"Student safety is critically important to everyone. The commissioners increased our funding to the school system and the school board decides how they want to spend it. It is my understanding that many new metal detection devices were purchased this year. Tricia McManus, the superintendent, found share the details.”
The student is facing a Secure Custody Order for Possession of a Weapon on Educational Property charge.
