WALKERTOWN, N.C. — Forsyth County Sheriff's deputies were on the scene investigating an officer-involved shooting Monday night.
Deputies said they received a report about a suspicious person around 6:15 p.m. When deputies arrived and confronted the suspect, they pulled out a firearm, leading deputies to fire their service weapon and injuring the suspect.
Forsyth County deputies provided aid until EMS arrived. The suspect was taken to a hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
Employees at businesses nearby said they had no idea what happened until customers started coming into their buildings panicking.
Brittany works at McDonald's about a block from where the shooting happened.
"We had a couple of customers come through the drive-through, telling us that they did think there was an active shooter over there. Somebody's apartment had gotten shot at. Somebody actually was injured because of the gunshot, so we were pretty concerned about that," she explained.
Jeremy Roark is the Pharmacy Manager at CVS. He said, "I just heard a lot of sirens going by, which is not uncommon. We hear that a lot, but customers started coming in and asking about traffic being diverted and a large police presence over there."
"For something like that to happen, especially so close to somewhere you were at, is really shocking, really surprising because I’ve never really witnessed something like that close to home, so it’s very shocking for people here," Brittany went on to say.
During a press conference, Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough said someone acted suspiciously in one of the breezeways at Keystone apartments in Walkertown. When deputies arrived, they said they saw a person with a gun in their pocket. When the person didn't comply with commands, the sheriff said deputies shot the person. At this point, Sheriff Kimbrough said it's not clear who all fired shots.
"We have the SBI; we have the evidence teams that are showing up, gathering shell casings and matching them to the firearm that the individual had, against the firearms ballistics that our deputies carry. As I said, shots were fired," Sheriff Kimbrough stated.
It is not clear how many times this person was shot or whether they lived at the apartments.
Deputies said there is no danger to the community at this time and that they are in the early stages of the investigation.
Sheriff Kimbrough said as protocol, two deputies are on administrative leave following an investigation.
Investigators said no further detail will be provided at this time.
