BURLINGTON, N.C. — An Alamance-Burlington School System school bus driver was fired after being accused of hitting a child, according to officials.
The Burlington Police Department detectives said it happened earlier in October. Police said Aofford Carmichael, 74, of Graham, was charged with assault of a child under twelve.
Investigators said the family of the 10-year-old victim reported the incident to the Burlington Police Department on Oct.9. During the afternoon route on Oct. 6, Carmichael stopped the ABSS school bus and hit the student in the hand/arm area.
Police said Carmichael was taken into custody by the Graham Police Department on Oct. 24. He received a bond of $5,000.
ABSS schools released the following statement regarding the situation:
We are aware of the recent charges against former ABSS Employee, Aofford Carmichael. He was dismissed on Oct. 17, 2023, and officially terminated on Monday, Oct. 23, 2023, by the Board of Education.
ABSS said Carmichael had been employed with the district since 2016.
