Burlington man charged in robberies, police say

Officers discovered the victim had allowed the suspect inside his home, and after an argument, the suspect attacked the victim with a cane and stole their car.

A Burlington man is in custody after he was charged with two robberies.

Burlington police said they arrived at an apartment complex off of Crouse Lane after receiving a a motor vehicle theft and assault call shortly before 5 p.m. Friday.

Officers said they found a 72-year-old man who had minor injuries to his head.

After initial investigation, officers discovered the 72-year-old man had allowed the suspect inside his home, and after an argument, the suspect attacked him with a cane, left the apartment, and stole the car.

Police issued out an alert for the stolen car and a description of the suspect.

The stolen car and suspect were found by NC State Highway Patrol on NC 501 in Person County within two hours of the alert.

Officers identified the suspect as McColline Thorpe Jr., 57, from Burlington.

Thorpe was charged with one felony count of Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.

Thorpe was also identified as the suspect in a robbery and assault on Trollinger Avenue on Dec. 24, 2023.

He is additionally charged with two felony counts of Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, felony Assault inflicting Serious Injury, and felony Larceny of a Motor Vehicle for that incident.

Thorpe is in custody at the Person County Jail.

His bond is set at $41,000.
