Bronze Door at Historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Vandalized

Someone vandalized the original bronze door at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse recently. The letters "SEF" were etched on the door of the century-old structure.

BUXTON, N.C. (WFMY)-- The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina was recently vandalized, according to a Facebook post by Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The post said someone etched the letters 'SEF' onto the bronze door that was a part of the lighthouse's original construction.

The structure is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States.

"Many residents of Hatteras Island have served as lighthouse keepers in the 1800s and 1900s, taking care of this iconic structure and helping to protect mariners off the coast," Superintendent David Hallac said.

"It is important that we treat the lighthouse with respect to honor the structure itself and the legacy of those that served in it."

If you have information about this incident, call 252-473-2111.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, completed in 1870, is a National Historic Landmark.
