Bicyclist dead after hit-and-run in High Point

Officers said when they arrived, they found the bicyclist dead in the roadway.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — A bicyclist is dead after a hit-and-run in High Point.

High Point police said they, the High Point Fire Department, and Guilford County EMS arrived at W. MLK Jr Dr. at Oakwood Street in response to a hit-and-run crash involving a car and a bicyclist around 6 p.m. Sunday.

Officers said when they arrived, they found bicyclist, Michael Lee Isaac Jr., 33, of High Point, dead in the roadway.

The High Point Police Department's traffic unit was contacted to assume the investigation.

After initial investigation, police determined Isaac was riding his dark in color bicycle in the travel lane of MLK Jr. Dr. while wearing dark clothing.

Neighbors who live close by where the incident happened tell WFMY News 2's Amber Lake that the area where the crash happened is very dark, and drivers should be aware of that.

Eddie Beasley said, "if you couldn't see his bicycle then something's wrong, you're not paying attention. But it's very dark back here after you go past Chestnut. And I don't think it lightens up until you get back up here around the market."

Bicycling in Greensboro is an organization created to help transform local areas into a more bicycling-friendly community.

The Project Coordinator said there are issues with roads not being safe enough for pedestrians or cyclists.

Nicole Lindahl explained, "poor lighting is a huge issue and it is still a problem here in Greensboro as well. So as soon as it's dusk or dawn, or if we're at night that does create problems and that is something that needs to change. We would need to make sure that people that are legally riding on our roads to get from their destination to another destination legally are can do so as safely as possible and, and not having a well lit area to do that is dangerous."

Investigators said the car that hit Isaac left the scene before emergency personnel arrived.

Officers said the investigation is in its early stages.

It's also Safe Streets week across the nation.

This initiative brings awareness to lives lost in traffic related crashes in order to reduce or eliminate fatal and serious incidents.

The city of Greensboro is hosting a kickoff event Tuesday in front of the Melvin Municipal building in downtown Greensboro.

The event starts at 12:30.
