MEBANE, N.C. — The Mebane Police Department is actively investigating an assault that happened at South Mebane Elementary School on Tuesday.
Based on preliminary findings, updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
Investigators have obtained a warrant for William T. Whitehurst, 62, who is identified as the suspect in this case. Whitehurst voluntarily surrendered to authorities at the Alamance County Magistrate's Office without incident.
