ASHEBORO, N.C. — The Asheboro Police Department is working to identify a man suspected of scamming an elderly woman out of $25,000.

According to police, the elderly woman was suffering from "memory issues". She had been trying to get support for her phone and got in contact with the scammer through a fake number online.

After just a few days of talking, police said he convinced her to send him approximately $4000 on various gift cards and then ultimately withdraw $25,000 in cash.

Police said she was instructed to mail the money, but the suspect had her drive to an Asheboro gas station to meet a carrier.

The suspect allegedly took the money and went inside the store, concealing the cash. He walked several businesses away before he was picked up by a 2024 Chrysler Pacifica Limited or Touring, according to police.

Police said the license plate on the vehicle appeared to be from Florida and could be a rental car.

Anyone with information about the suspect is encouraged to contact Detective Pierce at mpierce@ci.asheboro.nc.us or 336-318-4257.
