ASHEBORO, N.C. — A man was arrested after he hit an officer during a high-speed chase that went from Randolph County into Guilford County on Thursday, according to the Randolph County Sheriff's office.
On April 4, deputies responded to a call to assist the Asheboro Police Department with a chase on I-73 North.
Communications said the suspect vehicle hit an Asheboro officer while evading a traffic stop. Randolph County deputies caught up with the chase near Pineview Street and joined in. The vehicle continued to drive through traffic at a high speed, approaching an exit at 86 northbound on I-73.
Then, Asheboro police advised the sheriff’s office to take over the chase around exit 95B and that they would end it.
Randolph County deputies said that's when Guilford County deputies and the Greensboro Police Department (GPD) were notified.
GPD stated they had a K-9 Officer staging at the registered owner's address. Deputies said they lost sight of the vehicle on Cone Boulevard as it ran the red light.
GPD provided a possible suspect name, Tyrone DeVaughnte Woolard, as they continued their search for the suspect vehicle.
Officers with the GPD have stopped Woolard previously in that vehicle and stated that he is in a relationship with the registered owner. Shortly after midnight, the GPD found Woolard, and he was arrested on other outstanding warrants.
Randolph County deputies said they sought charges against Woolard, and the magistrate found probable cause for felony flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle, misdemeanor driving while license revoked, misdemeanor speeding, misdemeanor reckless driving-wanton disregard, (I) fail to stop- steady red light and issued a warrant for arrest.
Asheboro Police Department also sought charges against Woolard for:
- Felony flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle
- Felony assault with a deadly weapon against a government official
- Misdemeanor expired registration card/tag
- Misdemeanor driving while license revoked – not impaired
- Misdemeanor fails to heed light /siren
A warrant for arrest was issued and was served by Guilford County.
He is behind bars with no bond.
A first appearance was scheduled for May 13.
