VIDEO: A cash register is stolen out of a bakery in High Point

Surveillance video shows the thief walking around with a sledge hammer, and leaving with the cash register.

HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point said they are looking into a non-residential burglary at Sweet Dough Bake Shop.

The bakery has a smashed window and a stolen the cash register.

The bakery is family-owned, and celebrates it's 3rd year serving sweet treats to customers. Workers tell WFMY News 2 when they came in early this morning to prepare for the day, glass was all over the floor.

Surveillance video shows a thief caught on camera stealing the cash register around 4 a.m. Thursday.

"It felt like an invasion of personal space," General Manager Melissa Estrada said, "It just felt like if someone broke into our home."

Estrada said no one was at the shop when it happened. Now a 7ft. glass panel is broken on the side of the store.

Surveillance video shows a person with a sledgehammer walking around the bakery. You see the thief struggling to get the cash register open, then leaves with the entire register in hand.

"There was upwards $400-$500 in there which is what we were going to use for our change," Estrada said.

She said the bakery gave away smaller treats to customers and continued serving regulars throughout the day. Estrada said a robbery will not stop them from sweetening the lives of others.

"Thank you to the community for all the support we've been given after all the tragic events that have happened," she recalled.

Estrada said the staff plans to enhance it's security measures moving forward.

High Point police said a burger restaurant was robbed just 15 minutes later. Officers said someone shattered the front door at Porter House Burger Company and stole a safe.

The business is less than a mile away from the bakery. At this point, it's not clear if the crimes are connected.
