A neighborhood mourns after a father kills his two children

WSPD says the mother was unharmed and called police after the crime.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem police are investigating a murder-suicide after a high school student and her brother are dead.

Police said they were murdered by their father.

WSPD said around 3:30 a.m. on Monday they responded to a home on Water Lily Circle.

Investigators uncovered 55-year-old David Housden shot both of his children 20-year-old Alexander and 16-year-old Kaylee. Police said he then turned the gun on himself.

Police said the mother was present and reported what happened, she was not hurt.

WFMY News 2 spoke to a neighbor who saw over two dozen police officers at the home early morning. The neighbor said she knew the family and this news came as a shock.

"My son and him used to throw the football together and we would see them bonding out there with their dad. He came across as a man who cared a lot about his family and did everything he could possibly do in the home and outside the home. That's what it appeared when you see it on the outside," the neighbor recalled.

The neighbor said the 20-year-old was soon to be married.

"He was working on his studies and his career. He was a hard worker and apparently, him and this young lady had been together for about two years and just got engaged 5 months ago and she is absolutely devastated," the neighbor said.

A representative of WSSU confirmed that Alexander was a biology student. WS/FCS confirmed Kaylee attended Atkins High School and was a part of the color guard.

Both schools have set up mental health resource efforts for faculty, students, and staff.
