'Justice served' | A mother speaks out after GPD arrests her son's alleged killer

GPD recently arrested 24-year-old Kaleb Horton after connecting him to a homicide on Luray Drive in September of 2023.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — After a months-long investigation, Greensboro Police recently arrested 24-year-old Kaleb Deaundre Horton.

GPD charged him with murder for the homicide of 30-year-old James Tyler White.

WFMY News 2 spoke to White's mother Regena Brown. She said her family moved out of Greensboro a few years after his birth.

In September of 2023, Brown said White returned to the Triad to visit family and he did not return.

For months, Brown and her family have searched for answers after the murder of her youngest son.

Police said White was shot and killed on Luray Drive in Greensboro on Sept. 18, 2023.

"He was planning on moving back there, but it hadn't been finalized yet," she recalled.  "He was trying to lay some ground and see if that was definitely where he wanted to be."

It took police five months to catch White's alleged killer Kaleb Horton. The arrest was made on Feb. 15, 2024. Horton is charged with first-degree murder and he has no bond.

"From my standpoint, it's a sigh of relief," Brown said, "It means that possibly justice will be served in the death of Tyler."

Brown said she misses her youngest son every day. "It's extremely difficult, he and I were really close."

White leaves behind an 11-year-old son named Cameron. Brown said her grandson is a gift of love that keeps on giving.

"We still have a piece of him {White} here, thank God for that," she said, "It's a blessing that we have him to love on and to tell him stories of who his dad was."

Brown said White loved his family, people and the holidays.
