A man is dead after assault at a gathering in Davie County; suspect charged, deputies say

DAVIE COUNTY, N.C. — A man has died after being assaulted at a gathering on Saturday night, according to the Davie County Sheriff’s Office. 

The Davie County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to an active disturbance and assault with injuries at a residence on NC Highway 801 South in Advance on Saturday at 11:45 p.m.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found an injured man and people actively performing CPR on the man. Deputies began to assist with CPR efforts and learned there were multiple people on the scene for a gathering.

The Davie County Sheriff’s Office said a disturbance during the evening evolved into an assault on the man. 

Shane Crotts, 50, of Advance, died at the scene. 

Deputies learned the suspect had been driven away from the scene and were notified that the suspect was walking in the Todd Road area. The suspect was taken into custody by deputies from the Davie County Sheriff’s Office. 

Joel Johnson, 26, of Mocksville, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He was taken to the Davie County Detention Center with no bond.
