2 dead in officer-involved shooting in Winston-Salem

Officers responded to a break-in call at a home on the 3800 block of Queen Anne Circle.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Two people are dead after an officer-involved shooting in Winston-Salem.

Winston-Salem police said officers responded to a break-in call at a home on the 3800 block of Queen Anne Circle Sunday, where a suspect was reported to be armed with a gun.

When officers arrived, they heard gunshots coming from inside the house. Officers worked quickly to evacuate the residents, while more shots were fired.

Police said while they were securing the area around the house, Michael Preston-Robinson II exited the home with a gun and engaged with one officer.

Officers said Robinson was confirmed dead at the scene.

After further investigation, officers found Chrishawn Tyquese Watson dead inside of the home from an apparent gunshot wound.

Police also found two juveniles who were inside of the home during the house break-in and homicide.

Officers said the two juveniles were not injured during the incident.

Police said one of the residents of the house and Robinson knew each other.

Officers said Robinson was out on bond for the following misdemeanor charges: probation violation, assault on a female, communicating threats, and crime of domestic violence.

The Winston-Salem Police Department has asked the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) to independently investigate the incident.

Winston-Salem police said they will not be releasing the identity of the officer involved in the shooting at this time.

Police said the officers involved in the incident will participate in a critical incident debrief.

"It is no small thing to take another’s life, even if it is to ultimately protect others from harm," Chief William H. Penn, Jr. said during a press conference regarding the incident Monday.
