HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — An 8-year-old Tennessee girl was suffocated in her sleep on July 15, according to CBS affiliate WTVF Channel 5.

Police in Humbolt said they found home security footage last Wednesday that showed the girl's cousin, a 12-year-old, suffocating her using bed sheets as she slept on the top bunk of their shared beds.

CBS said according to a relative, the girls had been arguing over an iPhone.

Both girls were visiting family at the time.

The Humboldt Police Department filed a Petition of Delinquency to charge the 12-year-old with first degree murder. The petition also cited tampering with evidence.

Frederick H. Agee, the area's District Attorney General, said after the younger girl died, the 12-year-old "cleaned up the victim and repositioned her body."

"I consider this to be one of the most disturbing violent acts committed by either an adult or juvenile that my office has prosecuted," Agee wrote in the statement.

He said his office would petition a judge to try the juvenile as an adult in Circuit Court.

Rayana Smith, the deceased girl's mother, told CBS affiliate WREG-TV she's hoping for the maximum sentence.

The family's GoFundMe can be found here.
