1 dead in officer-involved shooting in Greensboro

Police say a man ignored commands and approached an officer with a weapon.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Greensboro on Saturday.

Greensboro police said they responded to the Lemans at Lawndale Apartment Homes shortly before 8:30 a.m. in response to an armed person.

When officers arrived they found Gerald Pinckney, 31, who was displaying what appeared to be a gun.

An officer gave repeated commands for the weapon to be dropped and police said Pinckney ignored those commands and began walking toward the officer while showing the weapon.

The officer fired their gun and Pinckney was shot, according to police.

Police requested EMS and rendered aid to Pinckney before he was taken to the hospital.

Pinckney later died from his injuries.

WFMY News 2 spoke to a few residents on scene, one said life should be taken more seriously.

"It tells me that people don't really care for how mortal they and how easily their lives can be taken," Kethon Gibbs said.

Another resident said he and his family have lived in the apartment homes for five years. Safety is his main concern after having a child.

"When you bring a child into it and there's gun fire, there's an officer involved shooting and then there's another  crime next door... it's a huge issue for me personally," Anthony Blount shared.

The Greensboro Police Department requested the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation respond and conduct a criminal investigation into the incident as is standard protocol.

The Greensboro Police Department’s Professional Standards Division will conduct an internal investigation to determine whether Greensboro Police Department policies were followed.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty per departmental policy.
