1 dead after disturbance call leads to police chase in Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A man is dead after a disturbance call led to a police chase in Winston-Salem.

Winston-Salem police said they responded to a report of a disturbance with weapons involving a person with a knife in the 600 Block of Waughtown Street around 11:40 p.m. Saturday.

When officers arrived, they found the suspect and victim's cars and tried to stop the suspect's car from leaving the parking lot.

Police said the suspect, Arnoldo Montenegro, 22, complied with officers at first, but then rammed a patrol car and drove away on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

A chase ensued on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and ended near Argonne Boulevard when the suspect crashed head-on with another car.

Emergency personnel nearby and on the scene rendered aid until EMS arrived and took Montenegro to the hospital for critical injuries.

Police said Montenegro died from injuries from the crash around 1 a.m.

Officers said the person involved in the crash had minor injuries.

Investigators said the victim in the disturbance on Waughtown Street is in good health.

Police said Montenegro and the victim knew each other.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the scene and assumed investigative responsibility for the crash.

Winston-Salem police said they will complete an internal administrative investigation through their Professional Standards Division to ensure policy and procedure were followed as is standard procedure.

Police said they will not release the identity of the officers involved at this time.

Winston-Salem police said the two officers have been placed on administrative duty.
