The City of Mebane joins several other social districts throughout the Triad

It runs Thursday - Sunday between 11 a.m.- 10 p.m.

MEBANE, N.C. — The City of Mebane adds its name to the list of registered social districts in the state.

This weekend marks the start of it's one year trial.

WFMY News 2 visited the social district to check-in on patrons and local businesses.

The social district allows patrons to buy drinks from permitted establishments.

If they choose to leave, patrons can walk freely with branded cups in the Downtown area.

One local bar owner told us it gives her patrons more freedom. Wendy Daye has owned Clay Street Tavern and Provisions for 16 years. It is one of the registered ABC permitted establishments in the Downtown Mebane's Social District.

"I think it just gives us a little more versatility, we can offer a little more," Daye said.

The social district stretches from Clay to 7th Street and runs from Thursday to Sunday. City council approved the social district for a one year trial period. Daye said its an opportunity for feedback.

"The city and the city council can see how well we implement it and how we handle situations that arise," she shared.

La Boardega is next door to the tavern, the store served several customers on Saturday. The owner said that is one perk of being a part of the social district community, the small business is nearing it's one year anniversary.

"It just means being a part of the bigger picture of growing a small town that I'd love to see flourish," owner Nohe Weir-Villatoro said.

If you plan to participate in Mebane's Social District remember beverages purchased outside of the social district or brought from home are not allowed.
