How are you staying cool this weekend?

With temperatures in the 90's we checked in with a local water park and small business who are based outdoors.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — With temperatures in the 90's, WFMY News 2 went out and asked people how they stay safe in the blazing heat.

We took a trip to Wet 'n Wild Emerald Pointe Water Park, administration told us it had thousands of visitors today.

Shelli Scott is the operations manager who said it's important to have resources available in case of an emergency. She said workers use devices to communicate through the park, in addition to phones at the top and bottom of each ride.

"Inside the park we also have first-aid, it's an air conditioned area. If anyone is experiencing a heat illness, we will come to you and bring you back to first-aid and help you cool down," Scott shared.

She advises families to keep a close eye on their little ones who take a dip. We met one visitor who said she came up with a game plan for both safety and hydration.

"I have them take breaks about every 30 minutes or so, I tell them to come and cool down," I let them have something to drink and sit in the shade." Shantina Alston said, "I also make sure they have something on their feet because the pavement gets really hot."

Whether you are chilling poolside or working the weekend staying cool is essential. We met one man who sits on East Market Street serving up ribs to the community.

"These people need to go somewhere and get some good food," Rex Durrett said.

He calls himself the Crazy Rib Man.

That's the name of his business, he serves people on the East side which is a food desert.

Durrett said he started his business by giving out free food and the rest is history. On a hot day like this, he said the heat will not slow them down.

"It's like anything else that you do, you find ways to deal with the problems. The sun is kind of hot today so we are dealing with it," he shared, "We try to keep people from having to heat their homes by cooking over a hot stove."

Doctors recommend beverages with electrolytes in addition to water for hydration.
