WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Samaritan Ministries of Winston-Salem will soon reach a community service milestone.
The organization will serve its 4 millionth meal in its Soup Kitchen on Wednesday, May 11.
To protect the Soup Kitchen guests' privacy, someone was chosen to serve as the ceremonial 4 millionth guest.
The Soup Kitchen opened in March 1981, and served less than 30 guests lunch. Today, the Soup Kitchen regularly serves 350-400 people lunch.
“We couldn’t have made it this far without the volunteers who are the backbone of our ministry,” Kurosky said.
It took 14 years to reach the 1 million meal mark in 1995. From there it took another eight years to reach the 2 millionth meal in 2003, and less than seven years to reach the 3 millionth meal in September 2010.
“These days we’re seeing more of the working poor and families with children, especially when school is out,” Kurosky said. “No matter what brings you to our Soup Kitchen, we try to provide everyone with a hot meal and a kind word.”
