May Community Diamond: Ivy Satterwhite

As WFMY News 2 celebrates its diamond birthday, we're celebrating diamonds in our community! This month we spotlight Ivy Satterwhite.

GREENSBORO, N.C. —  In 2024, WFMY News 2 turns 75! It's our diamond anniversary! As we celebrate our diamond year, we want to take time to highlight diamonds in our community. We know there are people all over the Triad who make their communities shine! WFMY News 2 asked members of the public to nominate their diamonds and we received several worthy entries. But this month, one stood out: Ivy Satterwhite.

THE NOMINATION

Ms. Satterwhite is a special education teacher in Guilford County. She not only makes changes in the classroom but outside as well. She has used her own resources to purchase clothes for students as well as haircuts for the boys to boost self confidence. During the summer months, Ms. Satterwhite travels with iCan Swim to teach children with disabilities water safety. These students usually learn how to swim in one week because of Ms. Satterwhite. I have worked with Ivy, and have seen first hand her dedication to children with disabilities. She is an advocate for them. She never complains, but always shows up for her kids!

ABOUT IVY SATTERWHITE

Ivy Satterwhite is an elementary school special education teacher in Guilford County Schools. She started as a teacher assistant and then attended the Prepare program at North Carolina A&T to get her masters in special education. As she's in the classroom, she says she loves seeing the progress her students make over the course of the year. She says shes had students who have started with no language progress to be able to use sentences and paragraphs. Her love for her students shines through when you watch her interact with them. She calls her students her babies. One of her students, Chandce Bobb, described Satterwhite as kind, loving, and fun. In addition to making sure they learn their academics, she also makes sure they have basic skills, which sometimes includes helping them brush their teeth and clean their faces. She says she wants them to have those foundational skills before they leave for middle school.

She also works with a program called iCanShine which teaches swim lessons for children with disabilities. Satterwhite got certified to be adapted aquatics instructor - which helps her be able to modify swim strokes for children with disabilities. When her students leave their lessons able to swim, she knows the families are impacted forever.

Satterwhite says, "I know there's a lot inside of me. I say my prayers daily and ask God to use me as He can and He continues to do it. I'm here for the children. They are our future."
