GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro families in need of shelter will soon have another place to call home.
The house will located in Greensboro, NC, at 520 Guilford Avenue. Mary’s House is a faith based program offering support for homeless women in addiction recovery.
Back in December the Greensboro Board of Adjustments supported Greensboro Urban Ministry's special use permit to move forward with operating Mary's House in the Westerwood neighborhood.
In honor of MLK Day of Service, Westerwood neighbors offered to help with cleaning up the outside of the home.
Over 25 residents showed up to move benches and rake leaves at the house.
Greensboro Urban Ministry's CEO Brian Hahne says the facility will provide a refuge for those experiencing homelessness.
"It's a 4,000 square foot home and its been in the community a long time and we think we can meet the needs depending on the family size and really provide the level of program support to folks who need safe shelter and need a place that their kids can call home and even be in school," Hahne said.
Hahne says the home has the capacity to fit up to eight families.
Currently there is a waitlist of 50 families at their Pathways Center and plans to serve the same population at this location on Guilford Avenue. Hahne said of those 50 families, many of them are women and children.
"In the spirit of Mary's House, we believe we are going to offer that specific kind of support. Those battling addiction, mental health issues, financial crisis, we have women and children in need of help and so we want to be apart of that and make it happen and we are excited we have the community's support," Hahne said.
