GREENSBORO, N.C. — Lawndale Baptist Church is known for its Feed the 5,000 event here in the Triad.
For 16 years the community has filled its parking lot for free Thanksgiving essentials.
This year, the event will happen but not in the same way.
A spokesperson for the church tells WFMY News 2 it is focusing its resources to help First Baptist Church in Swannanoa and its surrounding community.
"We have a contact there, my son is a pastor of a church in Swannanoa. We're going to go there and we're going to feed a hot Thanksgiving meal," Jimmy Jackson Administrative and Missions Pastor at Lawndale Baptist shared, "We feel like God is leading us."
WFMY News 2 spoke with the head pastor at First Baptist Church in Swannanoa Jeff Dowdy. He told us the community is leaning on the church for shelter and resources.
Dowdy said the flood waters from Hurricane Helene were only a few feet from the church door but thankfully it remained untouched.
"The waters came within about 30 yards of the doors of the church. We do feel very fortunate that we can be a resource to this community," he said.
Some of the items on the menu include: turkey, dressing and greens beans.
Lawndale Baptist said it plans to serve the dinner on Monday 11/25. The church is also hosting drive for canned goods and emergency supplies to ship to WNC.
For those here in the Triad, Lawndale Baptist has ongoing community events available to the public.
