Iconic News Anchor Sandra Hughes Returns to WFMY News 2

Hughes is widely regarded among the top newscasters and personalities ever in the Piedmont Triad.

Greensboro, NC – After a six-year absence, Sandra Hughes is coming home to WFMY News 2, the TEGNA-owned CBS affiliate in the Greensboro – High Point – Winston-Salem market. Hughes is widely regarded among the top newscasters and personalities ever in the Piedmont Triad.

“Sandra is one of the most recognizable, even beloved journalists here because she’s everyone’s neighbor. Sandra is the news lady everyone knows … and trusts,” according to WFMY News 2 President and General Manager Larry Audas. “The admiration and affection this community has for Sandra is incredible, and it’s our privilege to welcome her back home,” said Audas. “What’s best, Sandra will join Julie (Luck) on the 6:00PM news and I can’t imagine pairing up two bigger Triad favorites.” Hughes joins Luck as 6:00PM co-anchor on Monday, November 7. “Julie’s been so warm and welcoming,” according to Hughes, “and I can’t wait to rejoin the News 2 team.”

“At her retirement, Hughes handed the WFMY anchor baton to Frank Mickens, who now returns the favor,” said News Director Kim Ballard. Mickens has announced plans to accept a major market anchor position, but will remain at WFMY News 2 until the end of the year. “Like Sandra, I have spent my career at WFMY, and it’s a very special place to us,” said Mickens. “In fact, Sandra has been a dear mentor and friend to me throughout my career. I couldn’t be happier for her and the station.”

Among many honors, Hughes is a recipient of the coveted Edward R. Murrow award for news reporting. She was inducted into The National Academy of Television Art & Sciences Silver Circle and the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In 2002, she was honored with the North Carolina Governor’s Order of the Long Leaf Pine. She retired from WFMY News 2 in 2010 and became an adjunct professor of Journalism at North Carolina A&T University.

Hughes has not set a timetable for her ‘un-retirement’ or how long she’ll work. “Retirement’s pretty good, but I miss our viewers,” said Hughes. “I would be honored to be welcomed back into their homes.”
