ASHEBORO, N.C. — The City of Asheboro recently paved the way for nearly 350 homes.
Mayor David Smith said big-time manufacturing companies moving to North Carolina have investors calling him.
Asheboro city leaders are moving forward with a housing development called Hillcrest Farm. The affordable housing proposal located West of Zoo Parkway and South of Newbern Avenue is expected to host over 280 single-family homes and 64 townhomes.
A nearly $14 billion Toyota Battery Manufacturing Plant is expected to create over 5,000 jobs.
Mayor Smith said he wants workers and their families who come to the Triad to live in Asheboro.
"Asheboro, Randolph County can be ground zero for these thousands of people that may be moving to the Piedmont to work in these newly announced industries," Mayor Smith said, "We've had some large requests from developers recently —they see what the demand will be. We are doing what we can to meet that demand and it will be huge."
He said they had to develop the land because there were essentially no housing options left.
"The inventory of available housing is somewhat limited. We certainly have not had a lot of new construction," he recalled.
City documents project the build-out year for the development in 2031. Plans are still in the works.
