Guilford County athlete receives Special Olympics award

Dustin Edmondson has been involved with Special Olympics since he was 8 years old.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Guilford County athlete, Dustin Edmondson won the 2024 Special Olympics North Carolina Billy Quick Leadership Award.

Edmondson has been involved with Special Olympics since he was 8 years old. 

"It was truly an honor to win this great award," award recipient Dustin Edmondson said. "I am glad that I am involved on an international level to spread awareness. I try to be a true leader, so that athletes across the world can look up to me." 

He was one of the five Special Olympics athletes selected to participate in the 2023 Special Olympics World Games Final Leg Torch Run in Germany. 

The Billy Quick Leadership Award was created in memory of Special Olympics athlete Billy Quick of High Point. 

Quick was the campaign leader of the Sargent Shriver International Global Messengers. He led the campaign for a more inclusive world for people with intellectual disabilities.

After his passing, the award was established in 2017 to recognize SONC athletes for their leadership efforts.
