Future plans to combat homelessness in Greensboro amid pallet home removal

The pallet homes are expected to be all packed up by the first of April.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Tuesday was the last night that people were able to stay in the pallet homes for the season.

The city says anyone living there must move out on Wednesday. Crews will take down utilities throughout the rest of the week.

The city says the temporary shelters for homeless people will come down next Monday. They will be going into storage for the summer and will go back out when the weather gets colder again.

The Interactive Resource Center (IRC) runs the pallet home program. It is working on expanding to 24/7 services.

For 5 months, more than 50 people have made Greensboro's pallet homes a resting place.

This is the second time the city and IRC hosted its doorways project out of Pomona Park throughout the winter months. The program provides housing for those facing homelessness. Although temporary, the city says it's meeting a need.

They say throughout the season they were near capacity, almost reaching their 56-bed limit.

Liz Alverson, Supportive Housing Analyst, said it's wonderful to know there is an option.

"Unfortunately, the need is much greater than what we have available. So, at any given point throughout the last 5 months, roughly 60-65 people were on the wait list hoping to get a bed," she added.

The city says they will work with those who have stayed in the pallet homes on their journey to permanent housing. Conversations are being had about long-term solutions.

"Our long-term goal is to build and create more permanent supportive housing," Alverson said. "Folks who qualify to stay in these units will have a permanent place to go to and they can continue case management and support they need to be successful."

The pallet homes are expected to be all packed up by the first of April giving the city's parks and rec department enough time to get the field ready for the baseball season.
