Greensboro couple collecting new coats for children in need

The Rosa Foundation is holding its third annual Bless a Kid with a Coat Campaign.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — With the weather getting colder we all need a warm coat. A Guilford County nonprofit is doing its part to help make sure children in need have one to call their own this Winter.

The Rosa Foundation is holding its third annual Bless a Kid with a Coat Campaign. The group is collecting brand new coats for K-5 students in Title I schools in Guilford County.

Executive Director and Co-Founder James Rosa Jr. said he personally knows what a new coat can do for a child's self-esteem.

“As a child, I knew how it felt to get something used and I didn't feel good about myself when I got something used,” James Rosa Jr. said.  “But when I got a brand-new coat, or anything brand new sneakers or clothes, I felt so excited. I felt like I was on top of the world."

Executive Coordinator and Co-Founder T’ebony Rosa said the foundation is aiming to collect a thousand new coats for students by January 31.

“If you give a child a brand-new coat and give them the confidence to go forward and to get to school, that's going to help not only their attendance but also their performance level in school,” T’ebony Rosa said.

The group will have its first distribution at the Sylvia Mendez Newcomers School in High Point on December 9th.

During this drive, The Rosa Foundation collects new coats in a variety of avenues such as from community groups for their holiday service projects and sponsors who provide financial support to secure coats from their distributor.

In previous campaigns, it partnered with school administrators, guidance counselors, and social workers in Lenoir, Alamance, and Guilford counties to pinpoint children who were identified as having a need.
