GREENSBORO, N.C. — It was a monumental moment as Greensboro city leaders unveiled the refurbished Martin Luther King, Jr. bust sculpture.
A ribbon cutting was held on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to unveil the sculpture and the completed section of the Downtown Greenway from Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. along Bragg Street.
The city took down the Martin Luther King, Jr. bust of the sculpture for repairs, but it’s back and better than ever. It now sits on the corner of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and Bragg Street in Greensboro.
The MLK, Jr. bust was designed and fabricated by artist Wilbur Mapp and later refurbished by local artist, Jim Gallucci.
King had been scheduled to speak in Greensboro on April 4, 1968, the day he was assassinated. He canceled his appearance to remain in Memphis in support of striking black sanitation workers.
