Friend of a 16-year-old I-73 crash victim remembers her legacy

GPD says there were two other adults in the car at the time of the crash.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — We are learning new details about the 16-year-old girl killed in a car crash off I-73 on Sunday, Nov. 5.
Greensboro Police said two other adults were in the car at the time of the crash, but neither were seriously hurt.

WFMY News 2 spoke to a close family friend of the teen. Chloe Nelson-Hoyle is described as a positive young woman aspiring to be a hairstylist.  She passed away in the hospital after the car she was in swerved off of I-73, went airborne and crashed into the median.

Two other people in the car were not seriously hurt, but it is still unclear who was driving.

"Just receiving messages throughout the day from her saying 'I miss you. I can’t wait until we come home and have dinner.' I’m just gonna miss those positive aspects of Chloe," close friend Sally Long said.

Nelson-Hoyle would have been celebrating her 17th birthday in December. Long said it's hard to cope with the loss of a former student she took under her wing.

"She was my student in the sixth grade and from that point on, we had a very special bond. She spent a lot of time with my family," she reminisced.

Long said it saddens her to think of who Nelson-Hoyle wanted to grow up to be and losing the opportunity to do it.

"One thing she did all the time, she did her own hair. She recently came to me asking for help to get into cosmetology school," Long reflected. "That's one of the hardest things for me right now. I knew she had hopes and dreams, and she wasn't able to fulfill those."

"I think that her friends should actually use this particular incident as a reminder that life is short. Remember to make good choices and be careful," Long said.

She is planning a memorial for Nelson-Hoyle's family and friends next week. She is also handling the funeral arrangements.
