'Gas spraying everywhere' | Good Samaritan recalls incident after a car plows into a gas pump

The aftermath left a partially collapsed canopy at Pantry Shop and a smashed-up car.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A convenience store had to close its gas pumps after a car plowed into it on Jan. 6.

The wreck happened at Pantry Shop on South Holden Road around 9 p.m.

Dr. Ronald McIntyre said he helped save a father and his teenage daughter that night.

"My friend was running with me, but he backed off because of all the gas that was spraying everywhere. He runs into the store to have them shut off the pressure in the gas pumps and kill the electric," he said.

Shocking surveillance video shows a car speed across South Holden Rd. and plow into a gas pump.

"By the time I got to the car, the driver was trying to get himself out of the vehicle," McIntyre recalled, "I noticed there was someone in the seat behind the driver. She had her right leg pinned up in the front right passenger seat."

McIntyre said the impact was so severe, it left the father and daughter badly hurt and disoriented.

"All he could do was wander around in circles, he didn't know what day it was," McIntyre said. "There was some pretty severe facial and cranial trauma. He was bleeding everywhere, it was a pretty bloody scene."

He said the father and daughter went to the hospital with serious injuries.

"I was trying not to cause her any more pain than she was already in, but then you have to make a decision. Get out with a broken leg or burn up in gas." McIntyre said.

The car had busted windows, deployed air bags, and a gas pump inside the hood.

"I just hope and pray they recover really quickly, it's a miracle. God definitely was with them," witness Michelle Ramos said.

The owner of the gas station said it could take months before they can re-open the gas pumps.

Some regulars at the convenience store continue to support them. Throughout the day, many people came to see how the owner was doing.

"I'll purchase food, drinks, or water...anything to help him out so he can continue," Theresa Slade said.

The owner said one gas pump could cost them around $25,000 to replace.

At this point, it's not clear why the car drove into the pump or whether anyone will face charges.
