Need help filing taxes? Free tax prep assistance is now available!

For households with an income of $60,000 or less, your taxes can be filed for you thanks to Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).

HIGH POINT, N.C. — You certainly don't want uncle Sam coming after you! That's why it's important you file your taxes correctly this year.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) service is being offered across the triad to help those needing to file their taxes.

It is specifically for households that make $60,000 or less.

If you were one of the ones who received student loan forgiveness you will need to file it on your return.

Megan Scales with the city of High Point explains.

"Student loan forgiveness isn't something to worry about at the federal level because it is tied up in court at the federal level with the Biden Administration but state level has not necessarily decoupled from having to count the student loan forgiveness as income," Scales said.

She shared how many people don't know about refundable credits and withholding enough taxes in their return.

"First thing that comes to mind is the earned income tax credit. A lot of people don't know that are eligible for it. Some people don't know that they can get a credit if they have childcare expenses and then people do not know how they need to work through withholding enough taxes," Scales said.

You will need your ID, a social security card, and any tax documents like a W2 or a prior year return. There are multiple locations for the free tax prep assistance.
