Football Fans react to the tragic death of 26-year-old Diondre Overton

The Greensboro native was killed at a house party, GCSO says they are investigating the shooting as a homicide.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Guilford County's Sheriff's Office said they found 26-year-old Diondre Overton dead-on-scene after responding to a loud noise disturbance on Spring Mill Road.

Deputies shared they later learned shots were fired around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Overton is a Greensboro native and former Page High School graduate. WFMY News 2 stopped by the football field and spoke to fans.

Overton formerly served as Clemson University's wide receiver, some football fans said he had more life to live.

"He's not even in the prime of his life, he's at the start of his life," Ronald Hunter shared.

Some football fans said this act of gun violence hits close to home. Jina Bethea said she lost a loved one too soon and sympathizes for Overton's family and friends.

"It's just really hurtful to hear that someone lost their life due to gun violence. I definitely have been impacted by gun violence. I had a cousin that lost his life," Bethea said, "It's really horrible to hear that someone just coming up as an aspiring football player lost his life for no reason."

As the community mourns a local football legend, some said supporting each other is one of the first steps to healing.

"Community support means a lot when you see everybody pouring in with their love. He touched people while he was here," Floyd Bradley said.

Guilford County Sheriff's Deputies said this is an active investigation and the incident seems to be isolated.

Anyone who has information or who attended the party is encouraged to contact Detective J. Robertson at 336-641-5969.

Anyone who wishes to remain anonymous should contact Guilford County Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.
