City Addressing Short-Term And Long-Term Housing For Tornado Victims

While tarps and temporary fixes are in place now, the question remains: when will those who were displaced be able to get back into their homes?

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Hundreds of homes were impacted by the EF-2 tornado that ripped through many communities across the city. While tarps and temporary fixes are in place now, the question remains: when will those who are displaced be able to get back into their homes?

Greensboro Assistant City Manager Barbara Harris says they're trying to connect resources with tornado victims as quickly as possible.

"We have put together a planning team, and in-line with the Guilford County Emergency Services Recovery Plan, we are developing long and short term housing options for all those impacted by the tornado," she said, "There maybe housing assistance available for you, that we need you to take advantage of."

If your home was damaged or destroyed by the tornado, here are two numbers you should call for assistance:

  • City of Greensboro Neighborhood Development: (336) 373-2349
  • Greensboro Housing Coalition: (336) 691-9521

For every level of damage, Harris says funding is available to assist with temporary housing, rental down payments, utility deposits, and other costs.

"Every household is different, and we want everyone to reach out to us and take advantage of this opportunity," she said.

In addition, although the shelter at the Windsor Recreation Center will shut down on Thursday, emergency workers with the Red Cross say they will still be available to help people connect with agencies.

"We may start scaling down, we may get a little smaller but we’ve never gone away," said Susan Smith, with the Red Cross.

Both the Peeler Recreation Center and Willow Oaks Community Center will stay open through at least Saturday to provide resources to those in need. Click here for more information.
